Does formal education limit entrepreneurship? part 2

29 11 2007

In the first part, I talked about the mindset having too much formal education gives you. It is that you’ll always think about having a safety net. But as they say, to explore new oceans, you must first lose sight of the shore.

for the second part, I would like to talk about another mindset challenge. Remember when you were young, your parents told you to:

    • Go to school
    • Get good grades
    • Graduate
    • Get a good job with a good salary?

I had the same doctrine too. I thought that everything should happen step by step and one step can’t proceed the other. The school system also emphasizes the same thing; you cannot study a topic you like until you reach a certain grade, no matter how irrelevant other topics are to the one you like. But trust me, I had the same mindset too, until a couple of years ago when I “wandered” off the academic world to find a totally new world called entrepreneurship. If there is one person that could be a great example that this dogma is wrong, that person would be Farrah Gray.

Farrah Gray was a millionaire by the age of 14.. yes 14! not the other way around! so how did he do that? well, first of all, he knew that he didn’t have to wait till graduation to start doing something! He started selling lotion door-to-door at the age of 6 and continued on working to be a millionaire until the age 14, when he sold his maple syrup manufacturing company for $1.000.000. (now he’s richer, of course)

Now, try to imagine that you started doing business (or anything, for God’s sake) from a young age. Where would you be now? (I’m guessing in some exotic island dozing off and enjoying life). If you knew that you didn’t have to wait till graduation to start something, you probably would have achieved more than other people have.

moral of the story? there’s no such thing as starting too early; do what you want to do and do it now!
